Our Founders |
· In 1986, with the merging of the City and the County School Systems, the Knoxville Council PTA merged with Knox County Council PTA under the direction of then Knox County Council President Mrs. Pam Guinn and Knoxville Council President Ms. Gail Moore. Keeping the name of the Knox County Council PTA. · The first President of the combined associations was Louise Bartlett, who served in 1988-89 and later became President of the Tennessee PTA. |
Knox County Council PTA was founded in 1923 with Mrs. John A. (Emma) Switzer installed as President |
National PTA – Founded – February 17, 1897 |
Celebrated since 1910, Founders Day (Feb. 17) commemorates the first convention of the National Congress of Mothers, held February 17-19, 1897, in Washington, D.C. Each February, PTAs nationwide pay special tribute to Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, co-founders of the National Congress of Mothers, eventually called the National Congress of Parents and Teachers — today: National PTA. We also remember Selena Sloan Butler, who in 1926 founded the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, which united with the National PTA in 1970. |
National PTA’s founders had a simple idea—to improve the lives and futures of all of our children. As much as other conditions in America may have changed, that idea has not. PTAs keep it alive. |
Knoxville Council of PTAs was founded in 1909 with Mrs. Charles A. (Angie) Perkins installed as President |
