LEADERSHIP TRAINING |
|
The Knox County Council PTA and the Tennessee PTA host several annual leadership development training events throughout the year.
· Summer Leadership Training — The East Tennessee Region Director, council, and a local PTA/PTSA school host a Summer Leadership Training event each year in Knox County. Typically held in July, all PTA leaders in the East Tennessee Region are invited to attend as a “Traveling Team” of Tennessee PTA officers lead various training sessions. See the calendar for this year’s dates and location. · East Tennessee Region Fall Conference — The Region Director hosts a Region Conference for the East Tennessee Region each fall in Knox County. The focus of this conference may include leadership development or “hot topic” issues. Either way, it is another opportunity to learn something new with other PTA/PTSA leaders. One of the best investments your PTA can make is to send delegates to leadership training events.
Budget for and send as many delegates as you can to each of these educating and rewarding events. |

· Legislative Conferences — Every February, the Tennessee PTA hosts a two-day Legislative Conference in downtown Nashville. This event typically includes meetings in the House Chambers, legislative guest speakers, legislative visits, and a legislative banquet to honor advocacy efforts. Students are encouraged to attend the “mock session” in the House Chambers and a tour of the Capitol. Several are being planned for the 2009-10 school year. Visit Tennessee PTA’s website for more info: tnpta.org · State Convention — Tennessee PTA, with the assistance from local units in the host city, hosts an annual convention each year in April. Convention locations rotate between Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, Nashville, and the Tri-Cities area. Convention is usually a three-day event, including a sharing luncheon, an advocacy breakfast, general business meetings, guest speakers, training workshops, vendors, an awards banquet and a membership celebration breakfast. See the calendar for this year’s dates and location. · School of Instruction — Council hosts a “School of Instruction” each May for all incoming officers. This school includes refresher courses on the basics, as well as something new for more experienced leaders. The School of Instruction is generally held on the 2nd Wednesday in May. See the calendar for this year’s dates and location. · National Convention — The National PTA hosts a 3-4 day convention every year in June to offer leadership development training for incoming board members. Attending National Convention provides many opportunities for sharing ideas with local units from across the country. It is a great way to recharge batteries and being planning for a new year. See the calendar for this year’s dates and location. · Local Unit Leadership Training Series (on request) — Additionally, local unit PTA schools can request leadership training tailored to the needs of their board. Budgeting and Accounting, Parliamentary Procedures, Updating Bylaws, and Writing Winning Reports are a few samples of training sessions that can be brought to your board.
